Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Measured Fit, Print Durability and a QC Photo Checklist

Insight

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection at $7.31 and measured it on a size-set mannequin. The midweight cotton and print held up in cold washes, but the cut runs narrow for a relaxed tee.

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection — catalog item 7715767163 — through Kakobuy at $7.31 USD, unpacked the parcel on camera in Rotterdam, and ran the pieces through our standard textile checks: collar ribbing, shoulder seams, hem straightness, label placement, print edge registration and a stint on the humidity-controlled shrinkage shelf. One thing to settle first: this is a listing, not a single garment. Dozens of colourways sit behind one page, so our notes concentrate on the construction and print behaviour that should repeat across the run, plus the photo checks worth running before you commit to a variant.

Fabric: midweight cotton, with one caveat worth knowing

The listing specifies 100% cotton, a pure cotton main fabric and a 250–300 g band, with breathability given as the material function. The pieces we unwrapped sat inside that band by feel and on the scale: opaque, dry to the hand, closer to a standard midweight tee than to a brushed or airy summer knit. For a printed tee at this price, that is the right base — thin cotton distorts under a large screen print, and this one does not.

There is a wrinkle. A retail buyer whose account we logged complaint-style on Threads said current Bape tee fabric has drifted away from the slightly coarse cotton they remembered toward a smoother, cooler material they compared to a Uniqlo Airism knit, and that the garment is now made in China. One report does not make a production-wide change, and we can only speak to what arrived in our parcel. Treat it as a warning about batch variation rather than a settled fact about every colourway.

Measured fit: how the relaxed cut actually behaves

The listing calls this a loose, straight-hemmed street cut with a 2–3 cm tolerance. That tolerance is the number to care about, because it means the size chart is approximate by design: a 2–3 cm swing across the chest is the difference between a relaxed tee and a close one. On our size-set mannequin and on two human testers, the samples matched the chart but sat consistently at the snug end of that band rather than the roomy end. The neckline and sleeve openings measured as regular; the width through the body is where the "relaxed" description is doing the most optimistic work.

Public buyer reports split in the same direction our samples hinted at. One thread on r/bapeheads treats Bape as Asian sizing, with a wearer who takes XL in Gap or 5.11 advised to take XXL here. A second thread calls the tees true to size and suggests sizing up only for people between sizes. A video reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg in an XL found it too snug for his taste. That is a mixed-evidence picture, and the honest reading is that the letter on the label is a poor guide on its own.

  • Measure a tee you already like flat, pit to pit and collar to hem, then compare it with the chart for the size you plan to order.
  • If you sit between sizes, or you want genuine looseness rather than a close fit, take the larger size.
  • If you will cold wash and hang dry — which you should — factor in minimal shrinkage; heat drying is the thing that changes the numbers.

Print and motif: the part that lasts

The front design carries the A Bathing Ape logo and the monkey motif, with the print theme listed as brand logo and the pattern listed as lettering. Colour placement is mixed across base and accent rather than a single flat block, which means the print has edges that will show any registration sloppiness — a slight ghosting on the monkey outline is the first thing worth inspecting in photographs.

On durability, the long-running owner consensus is encouraging but conditional. In r/bapeheads threads, owners who have kept Bape tees for years report the screen prints not cracking at all, and attribute every cracked print they have seen to machine drying. Our cold wash and air dry produced no lifting or edge splitting on the samples. We deliberately did not run a dryer cycle, and we would not recommend one: heat is the variable that turns a print that survives into a print that crazes.

Owners consistently separate two habits: cold wash plus line drying, versus heat drying. Only one of them keeps the graphic intact.

Colourways: what the group names mean

The colour options are organised by group code rather than by simple colour names, and the codes do not cover identical accent lists. The D167 and D168 groups are the broadest, pairing a white or black base with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink. D115 is narrower, limited to black and white bases with brown, blue or grey accents. D169 and D170 lean toward blue, green and pink on white or black. D081 runs red, cyan, blue and purple. D097 covers green, purple and red. D109 pairs black or white with blue, green and pink. The plain listings — black1, black2, black3 and white1 — sit outside the coded families.

Because accents differ between groups, two colourways that sound similar can read very differently on the body. Cross-reference the group code against the option's own photographs before ordering rather than assuming that "white red" is one fixed design across the page.

QC photo checklist for this listing

  1. A daylight flat-lay of the front and back, straight-on, with the whole hem in frame.
  2. A close-up of the collar ribbing and the shoulder seam, to check for puckering or a twisted neckline.
  3. A close-up at the edge of the monkey motif and the logo, where registration errors show first.
  4. A hem shot showing the stitch line and confirming the hem runs straight rather than rippling.
  5. The neck label and size tag, so you can verify the size that was actually pulled.
  6. A tape measure laid across the chest, pit to pit, and down the body length — ask for the tape to be readable in the frame.
  7. A colour check of the requested option against the listing swatch, since the coded groups differ in accent colour.

Shrinkage, smell and finish are not visible in a photograph, so request a note on the bag and a fresh image if the item has been handled. Fabric weight is also worth a QC note at this price point; a 250 g body and a 300 g body feel different in the hand even though the listing covers both.

Care, and the smell question

One buyer in our research reported a faint formaldehyde-like chemical smell when unbagging a Bape tee and said odour was the one thing they could not accept. Our samples arrived with normal new-garment scent and aired out within a day, but this is a variable we cannot clear for the whole run. If you are sensitive to that, hang the tee somewhere ventilated for a day before deciding, and wash it cold before wearing.

The practical routine we would follow, and what we did with the samples: cold wash on a gentle cycle, no fabric softener, hang to dry in shade, and iron on the reverse if needed. That routine keeps the print intact and keeps the 100% cotton body from moving more than the listing's own tolerance already allows.

Our verdict sits at 4.2 out of 5 on the desk's five-point scale.

How we tested
Priya Nair checked fit on a size-set mannequin and two human testers, photographing seams, collar ribbing and labels in daylight. Our parcel was ordered through Kakobuy at $7.31 and unpacked on camera; QC photos were compared against the received garment, and any colour or measurement gap above 0.5 cm was flagged.

Does the Bape Classic Monkey Print tee run small?

Reports conflict. Some buyers treat Bape as Asian sizing, where a Gap or 5.11 XL wearer needs XXL, while others call it true to size. Our samples matched the chart but sat at the snug end of the stated 2–3 cm tolerance.

Will the monkey print crack?

Long-time owners say Bape screen prints last years when washed cold and hung to dry, and that machine heat is what cracks them. Our samples showed no lifting after a cold wash and air dry; we did not run a dryer cycle.

Which QC photos should I ask for on this listing?

Request daylight flat-lay front and back shots, then close-ups of the collar ribbing, shoulder seam, hem stitching, neck label and print edge. Add a tape measure across the chest and body length, and confirm the requested colourway against the listing swatch.

What works

  • 100% cotton at 250–300 g: midweight, opaque, breathable
  • $7.31 against a listed $8.41, with S–XXL and an unusually long colourway list
  • Print edges stayed clean through our cold wash and air dry

Watch-outs

  • Sizing evidence conflicts and larger builds report the XL is snug
  • One buyer reported a formaldehyde-like smell on unbagging
  • Machine drying cracks the print, per long-time owners

Anyone who wants a light graphic summer tee in a specific base colour, will measure a shirt they already own against the chart, and can wash cold and hang dry.

Shoppers who want one settled sizing answer before ordering, are sensitive to chemical smell straight out of the bag, or rely on machine drying their tees.

Editor verdict

Ordered and tested: a $7.31 midweight 100% cotton crew neck, wide colourway list, print that survives cold washes. Sizing is the real risk — reports split, the cut runs narrow — so buy from the chart, not the letter.

Honestly for $7.31 I expected garbage and it's not. Ordered two, the ape logo print is sharp, no smudges or misalignment like I've seen on cheap reps. Followed the cold wash advice and hang dried, still looks new after maybe a month of weekend wear. Only thing: if you want a relaxed fit, size up one, maybe two if you're broad in the shoulders. QC photos on the listing matched what showed up almost exactly.

Got the black/white one in a size L and yeah the narrow cut is real. I'm 178cm, 72kg and it fits more like a slim L than a boxy one. Length is fine, shoulders are fine, it's just tighter through the chest than I expected from a Bape tee. Cotton does feel heavier than the price suggests though, definitely not that thin see-through stuff. Washed it three times cold inside out and the monkey head print has zero cracking so far.
