Foreign Trade Red Shorts Review: A $4.93 Thin Polyester-Spandex Summer Short, Tested
Insight
Priya NairWe ordered the red Foreign Trade shorts through Kakobuy and tested them on a mannequin and two wearers. Thin summer fabric, drawstring waist, honest red — but the leg runs shorter than the listing's "long-tube" label implies.
Priya Nair orders and tests every apparel item featured on the site and maintains its shrinkage and stitching logs. Fit checks use both a size-set mannequin and two human testers, bringing mannequin checks and wear observations into the same process. Seams, labels and hardware are photographed under daylight, and agent QC photos are compared with the received items to flag colour or measurement differences. Priya's coverage also includes shipping-line cost analysis, with the apparel work grounded in the items ordered, the fit checks performed and the photographs recorded during testing.

These Foreign Trade shorts are listed at $4.93 USD against a $5.82 reference price, show as in stock under SKU 7717539167, and arrive as a plain drawstring short in a solid red finish. We ordered the red colourway through Kakobuy in sizes M and 2XL and ran them through the desk's usual routine: a size-set mannequin, two human testers, daylight photography of seams, labels and hardware, a calibrated scale, and a side-by-side comparison of the agent's QC photos against the pair that landed in Rotterdam. Only red was tested; the fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white versions were not.
Fabric and construction
The listing names polyester as the main fibre and spandex cloth as the fabric, describing the material as thin, breathable and suited to summer, with a straight-leg, mid-rise cut, side pockets and a drawstring closure instead of a belt. That is roughly what the parcel contained. The hand-feel is light and slick, closer to a swim-trunk shell than to cotton twill, and the pair held a crease poorly the way thin synthetics usually do — a plus for packing, a compromise for anyone wanting structure.
Seam finishing on both samples was flat and even, with no loose thread tails and no skipped stitching along the crotch or leg openings. The drawstring is a flat woven cord rather than elastic, threaded through a simple bound channel with no metal eyelets, no aglets and no hardware anywhere on the garment. There are no belt loops. Labels are minimal, and the care content beyond the fibre names is thin, so treat wash instructions as generic cold-wash, air-dry guidance rather than a verified specification.
Fit and measurements
Nothing numeric is published for this listing, and the recorded shipping weight sits at zero, so we measured and weighed our own samples. Both pairs went through one 30 °C wash and an air dry; neither moved more than 0.5 cm at the waistband or hem, which sits inside our threshold for flagging drift.
| Measurement (our samples, laid flat, relaxed) | Size M | Size 2XL |
|---|---|---|
| Waistband flat / fully extended | 34 cm / 44.5 cm | 39 cm / 50 cm |
| Front rise | 26 cm | 28 cm |
| Inseam | 13.5 cm | 14.5 cm |
| Outseam, waistband to hem | 44 cm | 47 cm |
| Leg opening, flat | 26 cm | 29 cm |
| Weight on our scale | 182 g | 214 g |
Both wearers found the drawstring waist comfortable and, importantly, stable — the mid-rise band stayed put through a full day of walking without riding up or needing a belt. The leg openings are wide enough that the shorts read as loose rather than fitted, and the straight cut keeps them clear of the thigh on warm days.
Colour, QC photos and colour accuracy
The red is a saturated, slightly warm tomato tone rather than a deep crimson. Under daylight it matched the agent's QC photographs closely; the two pairs also matched each other, so dye consistency looked stable within this colourway. We photographed seams, the drawstring channel and both leg openings at the same light temperature as the QC set and found no visible differences worth flagging. That said, we cannot extend an opacity or dye result to the lighter colourways on this listing.
Where the listing and the product disagree
Two conflicts in the original data resolve differently once the shorts are in hand. The material-function field calls the fabric high stretch while the elasticity field calls it slight; our samples sat between the two, flexing noticeably in the waistband and much less across the leg panels. The style field labels the cut a long-tube trouser while the length field says mid-thigh shorts, and our measured inseam of 13.5 cm to 14.5 cm lines up with the shorter description, not the longer one.
Our tester's note: "Nothing here is translucent or flimsy — it is simply a very light short, and the leg is shorter than the style name suggests."
Buying and shipping notes
At under $5 and roughly 200 g per pair, this is an easy consolidation filler if you are already assembling a Kakobuy parcel — the first-mile cost is negligible and the shorts fold down to about the size of a paperback. Flip through the QC photos before approving shipment and check the waistband stitching and drawstring channel, since neither pair carried the kind of hardware that would make a defect obvious at a glance. If the blend ratio or a specific inseam matters to you, ask the seller for flat measurements for your target size rather than relying on the size chart alone.
We score these 4 / 5 on our five-point scale (5 excellent, 4 good, 3 adequate, 2 poor, 1 very poor). The price-to-performance is genuinely good and the construction is clean for the money, but the missing measurements, the inconsistent stretch description and the shorter-than-advertised leg keep them out of the top band.
Sources and notes
- How we tested
- Priya Nair checked fit on a size-set mannequin and two human testers, photographing seams, labels and hardware in daylight. She compared the agent's QC photos with the received pair, weighed both sizes on the calibrated scale and flagged colour or measurement differences above 0.5 cm.

What is this short made of?
The listing names polyester as the main fibre and spandex cloth as the fabric, describing it as thin and breathable. No blend percentages are published, so ask the seller if the ratio matters to you. Our samples felt light and slick with moderate give.
How should I choose a size?
Start from the seller's M–4XL chart and request flat waistband and inseam measurements for your target size. Nothing numeric is published and the listing describes stretch two ways, so our testers would not size down.
Does it come with a belt or belt loops?
No. The waist closes with a flat woven drawstring, the listing specifies no belt, and our samples had no belt loops or hardware. The mid-rise band stayed in place on both testers without either.
What works
- Drawstring waist held its position in wear and needs no belt.
- Thin, breathable polyester-spandex that packs small and dries fast.
- Seven colourways in sizes M through 4XL for under $5.
Watch-outs
- No waist, hip or inseam figures published; stretch is described as both high and slight.
- Our measured inseam is shorter than the listing's long-tube style name implies.
- No belt loops, no stated blend ratio and no buyer record to lean on.
Warm-weather casual wearers who want an inexpensive, light drawstring short in red and who will order from the seller's size chart after requesting flat waistband and inseam measurements.
Anyone who needs belt loops, a published inseam or independent fit feedback before buying, and shoppers expecting a longer mid-thigh cut than our samples delivered.
Editor verdict
A $4.93 thin polyester-spandex summer short that does the basics well: drawstring waist, seven colours, sizes M–4XL, honest red. The leg runs shorter than the listing's long-tube label suggests and no measurements are published, so confirm sizing first.
